Samsung Electronics aren’t the only ones working on flexible and unbreakable display panels, as they showcased earlier this year with their YOUM display technology.Other OEMs like LG, Philips, Sharp, Sony and Nokia are all working on flexible displays, but it seems that Samsung will be the first to actually ship the display panels with as early as April, 2013.

According to Reuters, Samsung Electronics is likely accelerating the launch of its next-generation flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S IV which may come with its “YOUM” flexible and unbreakable display panels. Samsung is said to ditch the usual glass cover for its displays in favor of a plastic one, which is said to be virtually impossible to break. With this, Samsung might be making up for a huge selling point with a display that doesn’t shatter when dropped or hit with heavy object.
Codenamed “Project J“, the new Samsung Galaxy S IV could be up for release as early as April next year, according to various sources. The Samsung Galaxy S IV is also expected to have a bigger and better 4.99″ 1080p full HD display, powerful quad-core ARM Cortex A-15 processor based on the rumored Exynos 5450 SoC and a 13-megapixel camera, with picture density upped to 441 ppi, a big jump compared to the Galaxy S III’s 306 ppi and the iPhone 5′s 326 ppi.
UBS analyst Nicolas Gaudois said,
“Looking to the first half of 2013, we see evidence of Samsung likely accelerating the release of the Galaxy S IV – compared with May (this year) for the Galaxy S III. We believe preparations for volume manufacturing of unbreakable plastic substrate displays continue. All in all, we could see a strong products push in the high-end in the first half, followed by other releases.”
According to Mark Newman, an analyst at Stanford Bernstein in Hong Kong,
“Eventually, they’ll have unbreakable and flexible displays. Either the Galaxy S IV or S V will have unbreakable and even possibly flexible and fold-able displays by 2014. That’s going to be a game-changer”
As expected, Samsung Electronics has declined to comment on the same.
